I know I'm a little late to the party but I just discovered the whole felt food craze. With Christmas coming up, we scored a great Little Tikes play kitchen from Craigslist to give to the kids and I was on the prowl for some play food to go with it. What I found was extremely disappointing. Not only is almost all the food made out of plastic, the majority of the sets are riddled with junk food! I wanted to give my kids fruits and veggies and the kind of food they like to eat at home - spaghetti, pancakes, eggs, sandwiches, chicken. They're allowed to indulge frequently enough as it is, I don't need the plastic play french fries tempting them.
At first I thought about making some foods out of fabric so I did a quickie search to see if there was any info out there and that's when I came across the whole felt food thing. Instantly, my eyes glazed over and I began plotting my trip to the craft store to purchase piles of felt and embroidery floss. Completely obsessed.
So far I've made fried eggs, broccoli, green beans, carrots, lettuce leaves, tomato slices, cheese slices, and bacon. I have the pieces cut out for pancakes, bread, pizza, spaghetti and who knows what else. It is a load of fun to make and I think the kids will both love playing with their new kitchen and food. I'll post pics when I get a little more done.
